Abstract

Background: Skin problems can have an impact on health and appearance that supports one’s confidence. Free radicals are one of the cause that play a role in skin dermatology disorders. The use of antioxidants is required to ward off free radicals, but synthetic antioxidants provide a dangerous effect when used in the long run. Japanese papaya leaves are one of the plants that have potential as natural antioxidants. The use of antioxidant extracts is considered less effective so it is necessary to innovate the manufacture of cosmetics in the form of creams. Purpose: Getting a cream preparation formula that has a good physical characteristic and effective as an antioxidant. Method: The cream preparation made by vary the concentration of stearic acid is F1 (5%), F2 (10%), F3 (15%) and F4 (20%). Formulas showing the best characteristic of organoleptic test result, pH, spread, power, homogenity, irritation and stability subsequent test of antioxidant activity by FRAP method. Result: The result show that the effect of variation of stearic acid concentration does not affect the physical evaluation of the preparation with p value > 0,05 but influences the stability of the preparation with p value < 0,05. Formula 2 (stearic acid 10%) provides the best characteristic of the cream preparation with the result of the test parameters meet the standards. The result of the test antioxidant activity of formula 2 has an IC50 value of 30,68 ppm with ascorbic acid as a positive control of 21,41 ppm. Conclusion: Cream formula 2 of japanese papaya leaves extract with 10% stearic acid concentration has good physical characteristic and effective as an antioxidant with very strong category. Recomendation: Need viscosity test, test the stability of the preparation on H-1, H-7, H14, H-21 and H-28 as well as use of DPPH, CUPRAC, FIC and ABTS method in testing antioxidan activity.
