Abstract

Background : Dysentery is an infectious disease that causes wounds and causes ulcers limited to the colon. Patients with severe cases or low immune response usually require antibiotics to reduce the duration of the disease, but the current use of antibiotics is not completely safe for the body because it can cause side effects. Therefore, alternative strategies are needed from other sources, namely traditional natural medicines. Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) leaves contain active compounds such as flavonoids and tannins which are antibacterial because they can damage bacterial cell walls. Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L) Urb.) leaf against Shigella dysentriae bacteria. Methods : This type of research is an experimental study with the disc diffusion method. Pegagan leaves were extracted using the maceration method with 70% ethanol as a solvent. The gotu kola extract that had been prepared was then diluted using DMSO at concentrations of 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 75%. Positive control used ciprofloxacin 1 mg/ml and negative control used DMSO. Results: The results showed that there were significant differences between the series of extract concentrations. This is shown from the results of the One Way ANOVA test which states the p value <0.05. The best inhibition zones produced were from concentrations of 60% and 75% in the medium category with the diameters of the inhibition zones being 7.1 mm and 7.2 mm, respectively. Conclusion: : The ethanol extract of gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L) Urb.) leaves can inhibit the growth of Shigella dysentriae bacteria at a concentration of 75% with an inhibitory power of 7.2 mm which is classified as moderate. Recommendation: It is necessary to conduct a similar study on the antibacterial activity of gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L) Urb.) leaves against Shigella dysentriae bacteria with different solvents and methods to determine which solvent and method are more effective.
