Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease in which the systolic blood pressure is above normal (> 140 mmHg). Signs and symptoms that often appear are headaches caused by damage to the blood vessels. Non-pharmacological therapy Progressive Muscle Relaxation can reduce blood pressure by reducing sympathetic nerve activity and increasing parasympathetic nerve activity and causing small artery diameter vasodilation. The parasympathetic nervous system releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which inhibits sympathetic nervous activity by reducing myocardial contractility, arterial and venous vasodilation. Objective: Provide an overview of acute pain nursing care for hypertensive patients in reducing pain levels using progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Method: This research uses a case study description method that describes the results in a narrative. Respondent criteria included patients with blood pressure < 140/90 mmHg, complaints of mild to moderate headaches, composmetic awareness and age > 40 years, cooperative patients and willing to be case study subjects. Research data were obtained from blood pressure monitors and pain scales before and after therapy. Results: There was an average decrease in blood pressure of 10 mmHg after therapy and the pain scale experienced an average decrease of 4. Recomendation: This therapy is easy to do independently because there are not negative effects and effective for reducing headaches
