Abstract
Background : Chronic kidney failure is a kidney condition that has experienced problems and can’t recover. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Service Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2021 in the United States around 35 million people have chronic kidney failure. Patients with chronic kidney failure fluid restriction is carried out that causes excessive thirst. Chewing xylitol gum and gargling mineral water can be made to reduce the thirst. Purpose : To identify whether there is a decrease in thirst and the difference in the effectiveness of chewing xylitol gum and gargling mineral water. Method : This type of study is a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test with a two group design method without a control group. The research instrument uses VAS (Visual Analog Scale). The respondents were 34 people who were divided into 2 groups. The data were processed with SPSS-25 and analyzed with T-Test. Result : The results revealed that there was a difference in the level of thirst before and after the intervention was given. The results of Independent T-Test show sig2 tailed of 0.00 < 0.05. It indicates is an effective difference in the level of thirst between chewing xylitol gum and gargling mineral water. Conclusion : Chewing xylitol gum and gargling mineral water can reduce the thirst of chronic kidney failure patients, but chewing xylitol gum is more effective. Recommendation : Future researchers can develop with more thirst reduction methods used, and add more research respondents so that more people know the benefits of these interventions
