Abstract

Background, diarrhea is an event of defecation which is characterized by an increase in frequency and a change in the consistency of the stool to become liquid, slimy and or bloody. Antibiotic therapy is one of the treatments for diarrhea if there is mucus with or without blood in the stool. Irrational use of antibiotics risks increasing bacterial resistance. Objective, this study aims to determine the rationality of using antibiotics in pediatric diarrhea patients at the Inpatient Installation of Prembun, Kebumen Hospital. Methods, this research is a non-experimental observational study with retrospective data collection. Evaluation of the rationale for the use of antibiotics compared to the 2011 IDAI Medical Service Guidelines and the 2016 Pediatric Drug Dosage Pocket Book. Results, the results of rational use of antibiotics based on the Gyssens method were Category 0 (appropriate and rational antibiotics) of 43 prescriptions (47%), Category IIA (incorrect antibiotic dosage) of 8 prescriptions (9%), Category IIB (incorrect antibiotic interval) of 1 prescriptions (1%), Category IIIA (antibiotics too long) 15 prescriptions (16%), Category IIIB (antibiotics too short) 6 prescriptions (7%), Category IVA (antibiotics that are more effective) 14 prescriptions (15 %), and Category IVB (there are safer antibiotic) 4 prescription (5%). Conclusion, from the results of the study it can be concluded that there is 47% appropriate and rational use of antibiotics (Category 0) and 53% inappropriate and irrational use of antibiotics (Categories I-VI). Recommendation, it is necessary to carry out prospective studies so that proper therapy monitoring can be carried out if irrational use of antibiotics is found.
