Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by the body's metabolic system, which becomes unable to produce insulin according to the body's needs. This leads to an increase in blood sugar levels and the potential development of gangrene. DM sufferers need to practice good self-management to prevent the occurrence of gangrene. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the factors associated with the incidence of diabetic gangrene in diabetes mellitus patients at Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Hospital. Method: This study employed an analytic correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The population for this study comprised all diabetes mellitus patients who underwent examinations at Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Hospital, totaling 150 patients. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, resulting in a sample size of 110 individuals. Results: The study revealed that the majority of patients belonged to the late elderly age group of 56-65 years, accounting for 83 (75.5%) of the participants. The majority of patients were female, with 81 (73.6%) being women. Medication adherence was mostly rated as low, with 66 (60%) participants falling into this category. Dietary compliance was found to be mostly disobedient, involving 60 (54.5%) patients. The majority of patients had poor nail-cutting habits, with 102 (92.7%) admitting to this. Notably, there were no cases of gangrene reported by 68 (61.8%) respondents. A significant number of participants had been living with diabetes for more than 10 years, totaling 57 (51.8%) individuals. Additionally, the study found that the majority of patients were non-smokers, accounting for 78 (70.9%) individuals. The incidence of diabetic gangrene was observed in 58 (52.7%) patients. The statistical analysis indicated that age, gender, medication adherence, diet, history of diabetes mellitus, duration of suffering from diabetes, and smoking had a p-value of less than 0.05, suggesting a significant association with the occurrence of diabetic gangrene. Conclusion: The study's findings demonstrated that age, gender, medication adherence, diet, history of diabetes mellitus, duration of suffering from diabetes, and smoking were associated with the occurrence of diabetic gangrene in diabetes mellitus patients at Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Hospital.
