Abstract
Background:With increasing age, a human's cardiovascular system changes, which has an impact on hypertension. Hypertension management is divided into pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Back massage is a form of body stimulation and touch on the back and shoulders that can help relax muscles and provide relief from chronic pain associated with hypertension. Objective: To provide nursing care for elderly patients with hypertension and chronic pain at the neurological polyclinic in RSUD Dr. Soedirman Kebumen. Method: This study used a descriptive method with a case study approach. The subjects of this study were five elderly patients with hypertension and chronic pain. Nursing care formats used nursing kits, the NRS (Numeric Rating Scale), and the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for back massage. All the data in the study included subjective and objective data, which were documented in nursing care resumes. Result: The study found that the respondents complained of chronic pain in both the head and neck. The priority nursing diagnosis for these patients was chronic pain associated with hypertension. The nursing intervention implemented was pain management (I.08238); the researcher conducted pain scale assessments, vital sign measurements, and taught relaxation techniques through back massage to reduce pain. The respondents got back massage therapy as a non-pharmacology therapy, and they claimed their pain scale scores decreased after getting it. Respondents 1, 3, and 4 experienced a decrease of 2 in the pain scale, and respondent II experienced a decrease of 1. The back massage therapy was effective in reducing signs and symptoms of chronic pain in elderly patients with hypertension. Recommendation: The results of this nursing care study can be a reference for developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for treating patients with hypertension, especially back massage therapy as a non-pharmacology therapy.
