Abstract
Background: Based on the prevalence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in toddlers in the Central Java province, according to the findings of the 2018 Riskesdas survey, approximately 10,551 cases were identified. Data collection in 2020 revealed that 53% of ARI cases in children in Central Java province remained relatively high. Therefore, this was a problem that needed to be properly addressed, either independently or with medical assistance. One of the complementary therapies for managing ARI is the administration of beken and honey, which can be used to improve airway clearance in pediatric patients with ARI. Objective: This study aimed to describe the application of beken and honey in treating airway clearance in pediatric patients with ARI. Method: This scientific writing employed a descriptive method by recording factual and accurate data obtained from observations, interviews, and participant analysis of three pediatric cases with acute respiratory infections. Results: The study of the three patients revealed that they had ineffective airway clearance. The nursing diagnosis was ineffective airway clearance related to retained secretions. The intervention involved administering beken and honey to the three patients to promote airway clearance in children. After administering beken and honey consecutively three times, notable improvements were observed in the patient's respiratory rate, secretion production, and chest indrawing. Consequently, airway clearance was effectively resolved. Conclusion: The administration of beken and honey can effectively address airway clearance issues in children.
