Abstract

Background: Diarrhea is a disease characterized by a change in the consistency of soft feces to liquid. Papaya plant (Carica papaya L.) is a plant that can be used as an alternative treatment for diarrhea with fewer side effects. Purpose: This study aims to determine the antidiarrheal effect and concentration of methanol extract and distilled water extract of papaya leaves (Carica Papaya L.) on male white Wistar rats induced by Oleum ricini. Method: This research was a laboratory experiment using papaya leaf (Carica papaya L.) extract with 50 male wistar rats as subjects. The test animals were divided into 10 treatment groups, namely negative control (CMC-Na 0.5%), positive control (Imodium), methanol extract and aquadest extract groups with concentrations of 300, 450 and 600 mg/kg BW. The antidiarrheal test method uses oleum ricini induction. The parameters observed include frequency, consistency and weight of feces. Results: The effective concentration series of methanol extract and distilled water, namely 300 and 450 mg/kgBW, was able to reduce frequency and consistency as seen from the high mean difference and was declared significant (p<0.05). The most effective concentration series for reducing stool weight were methanol extract 300 mg/kgBW and distilled water extract 600 mg/kgBW as seen from the high mean difference which was stated to be significant (p<0.05). Conclucion: Series concentrations of methanol extract and papaya leaf distilled water of 300 and 450 mg/kgBW have antidiarrheal effects in reducing defecation frequency and consistency. Meanwhile, the concentration series of methanol extract of 300 mg/kgBW and distilled water extract of 600 mg/kgBW had an antidiarrheal effect in reducing feces weight which was declare (p<0.05). Suggestion : Further research is needed regarding antidiarrheal tests using other methods.
