Abstract
Background : Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by increased body blood sugar levels or hyperglycemia. Administering oral antidiabetic drugs is one of the pharmacological therapies given to diabetics, but long-term use of oral antidiabetic drugs can cause side effects and is quite expensive. Citronella plants (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) is one of the natural ingredients that can be used as an alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus with minimal side effects. Research purposes : This study aims to determine the effect and dosage of citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) as an antidiabetic in male mice alloxan-induced. Research methods :This study used citronella plants (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) with 25 male white rats of the wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus). The test animals were divided into 5 treatment groups, namely negative control (DMSO), positive control (Amadiab tablets 0.04 mg/kgBB), the essential oil group doses of 250, 500 and 650 mg/kgBB. This study used a diabetic rat model induced using alloxan solution 40 mg/kgBW intraperitoneally. The treatment was given orally for 21 days with observations every 7 days. The decrease in blood sugar levels was calculated using the % reduction formula and analyzed using the SPSS version 16 program with statistical testsOne Way Anova andAfter this-LSD. Research result : Citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) has an antidiabetic effect with a percent decrease of -7% in the negative control and 45% in the positive control while at doses of 250, 500 and 650 mg/kg BW with a percent decrease of 20%, 36%, 40% it can significantly reduce blood glucose levels in rats induced diabetesalloxanwith a value < 0.05. Conclusion :The biggest percentage decrease was in the treatment group with a dose of 650 mg/kgBB. Recommendation :Further research is needed regarding anti-diabetic testingin vitro and antidiabetic test of citronella essential oil.
