Abstract

Background: Ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) is a medicinal plant belonging to the Elaeocarpaceae family. Ganitri leaves contain flavonoids and tannins that have cytotoxic potential. Objective: To determine the cytotoxic effect of ethanol extract and distilled water of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test method and LC50 value of ethanol extract and aquadest of ganitri leaves. Methods: The study used the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method using 10 Artemia salina Leach larvae divided into 6 treatment concentrations, namely 500 ppm, 250 ppm, 125 ppm, 50 ppm, 25 ppm, and 12.5 ppm respectively as well as control negative with 5 replications. Larvae that died at each concentration were then calculated % of mortality, seen the probit value, then a linear regression curve was made for the log concentration vs. probit value. The linear regression equation is then used to calculate the LC50. Results: The results showed that the ethanol extract of ganitri leaves (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) obtained a linear regression equation y = 0.5507 + 3.7499 with an LC50 value of 186.2173 μg/ml while aquadest extract of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves was obtained linear regression equation y = 1.1811 + 2.2951 with an LC50 value of 195.053 μg/ml. The results of both ganitri leaf extracts were in the moderate category. Conclusion: The ethanol extract and distilled water of ganitri leaves (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) have moderate anticancer potential. Recommendation: Suggest to do cytotoxic test with other method.
