Abstract
Background: In general, patients with infections or respiratory problems would experience an increase in the production of excess mucus or phlegm in their lungs. The accumulated mucus would become sticky and adhere to the respiratory tract, making secretion difficult. The main issue in patients with bronchitis was ineffective airway clearance, characterized by dyspnea, rhonchi, excessive sputum, and ineffective coughing. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the effective application of chest physiotherapy and coughing as a management strategy for ineffective airway clearance in bronchitis patients. Method: This paper adopted a descriptive case study design. The subjects of the case study were five bronchitis patients who had problems with ineffective airway clearance. Data was collected through observation techniques, interviews, and documentation studies. Results: The main nursing diagnosis that appeared in all five bronchitis patients was ineffective airway clearance. Implementation was carried out based on nursing interventions, and the evaluation of the results showed that after 3x5 hours, the patients experienced an increase in effective coughing and a decrease in sputum production. Recommendation: Nurses were encouraged to be proficient in the application of effective chest physiotherapy and coughing techniques to address nursing problems related to ineffective airway clearance in bronchitis patients.
