Abstract
Background; Insulin is a natural hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin is needed by the body's cells to convert and use glucose in the blood, which in carrying out its functions requires cells that produce energy. Insulin therapy errors are quite common and become an important clinical problem. Even insulin therapy is included in the top five "high-risk medication" for patients in the hospital. Most of these errors are related to hyperglycemia and some are due to hypoglycemia. These types of errors are due to limitations in terms of skill (skill-based), method or protocol (rule-based), and knowledge (knowledge-based) in terms of insulin use. Objective; Evaluating how to use insulin pens in patients with diabetes mellitus at RSUD Dr. R. Goeteng Tanoeadibrata Purbalingga. Methods; This study is a non-experimental (observational) descriptive study using a retrospective observational method obtained by filling out a questionnaire conducted by diabetes mellitus patients receiving insulin pen treatment at RSUD dr.R. Goeteng Tanoeadibrata Purbalingga. Results; Based on the results of a survey conducted on 85 patients at dr.R. Goeteng Tanoeadibrata Purbalingga as many as 37 patients (43.4%) were correct and as many as 48 patients (56.5%) were not correct Conclusion; Diabetes mellitus patients with insulin pen treatment at RSUD R Dr. Goeteng Tanoeadibrata Purbalingga, i.e. 37 patients (43.4%) who were good and correct in using insulin pens and 48 patients (56.5%) who were good but not correct in using insulin pens. This error occurs because there are still several important steps or procedures in using an insulin pen that are not carried out by the respondent when injecting insulin. Recommendations; counseling and education can be carried out regarding how to use insulin pens.
