Abstract
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by joint pain resulting from chronic systemic inflammation of unknown origin. It can lead to joint damage, resulting in significant mortality and morbidity. Treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and non-pharmacological interventions, such as warm compress therapy. Purpose: To explain gerontic nursing care for elderly patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and experiencing chronic pain in Wonorejo Village, Karanganyar District. Methods: We employed a descriptive method with a case study approach for this research. Our sample consisted of five elderly clients who were dealing with joint pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The study utilized a standard operating procedure (SOP) for applying lemongrass warm compresses, observation sheets for pain scale measurements, and observation sheets for positioning lemongrass warm compresses. Results: After implementing the warm lemongrass compress therapy over a span of two weeks with six sessions, each lasting 20 minutes, all five clients who had been experiencing chronic pain due to rheumatoid arthritis exhibited an average reduction in their pain scale scores, decreasing from an initial range of 3-6 to 3-1. Recommendation: The findings of this study can be applied to patients suffering from joint pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis as an effective non-pharmacological approach to alleviating their discomfort—specifically, through warm lemongrass compress therapy.
