Abstract

Background: Dementia represents a decline in intellectual abilities, particularly affecting memory, cognition, and personality. In Indonesia, approximately 29.3 million elderly individuals, constituting 10% of the total population, grapple with this condition. Globally, there are 55.2 million people suffering from dementia, with estimates projecting an increase to around 78 million by 2030. Among the elderly, degenerative diseases afflict a significant 60–70% of individuals, resulting in dementia. Objective: To analyze gerontic nursing care aimed at mitigating memory disorders in elderly individuals with dementia through brain exercise therapy. Method: This nursing research utilizes a descriptive case study approach. The study involves five elderly participants diagnosed with dementia. Assessment tools employed include the gerontic assessment format, MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination), and SPMSQ (Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire) assessments. The nursing diagnosis identified is memory impairment, and the intervention consists of brain exercises. These exercises are administered five times a week over a two-week period, with each session lasting seven minutes. Evaluation is based on MMSE and SPMSQ scores measured both before the intervention and on the final day of the intervention. Results: The MMSE assessments revealed that all five respondents experienced moderate dementia, while the SPSMQ assessments indicate that 40% exhibited moderate intellectual impairment and 60% displayed mild intellectual function impairment. After implementing brain exercises over a two-week period, five times a week for seven minutes each session, the MMSE results showed that 60% experienced mild dementia, and 40% still had moderate dementia. As for the SPMSQ results, 60% demonstrated intact intellectual function, 20% exhibited mild intellectual function impairment, and 20% displayed moderate intellectual function impairment. Recommendations: The findings suggest that brain exercises can be a valuable tool in alleviating memory problems in elderly individuals with dementia.
