Abstract
Background: umbilical cord care is one of the care for newborns, which aims to prevent and identify bleeding or infection early. The mother's low knowledge about umbilical cord care is thought to be a factor in the occurrence of umbilical cord infection. In Indonesia, the incidence of neonatal infection ranges from 24% to 34%, which is the second cause of death after neonatal asphyxia. So it is important to conduct a study to determine the extent of maternal knowledge in performing umbilical cord care. Purpose: This study aims to determine the knowledge level of post partummother about newborn baby’s umbilical cord at kebumen II community health center area. Research method: This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. Sampling using purposive sampling technique and obtained a sample of 42 respondents. Data collection using umbilical cord care questionnaire. Research result: Characteristics of respondents based on the age of the respondents, most of the respondents, namely 35 people (83%) were in the age of 20-35 years. The majority of respondents, namely 18 people (42.9%) have high school education (SMA). Based on occupation, the majority of respondents did not work, as many as 39 people (92.9%) and based on parity 31 people (73.8%) had given birth more than once or were multiparous. The level of knowledge of respondents about umbilical cord care is in the good category, where as many as 39 people (92.9%) understand how to care for the umbilical cord. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that the knowledge of postpartum mothers at at kebumen II community health center area about regarding umbilical cord care is good enough. category Recommendations: Nurses are expected to be able to minimize the incidence of neonatal infections due to improper umbilical cord care, by providing education to postpartum mothers just before the mother is going home.
