Abstract
Background: Thalassemia major is a type of thalassemia that must undergo a blood transfusion for life. Iron chelation drugs are used to reduce the increase in iron levels in the body due to the side effects of blood transfusions. The use of iron chelation drugs can cause significant effects, so it is important to review the treatment therapy during its use. Research objectives: To determine the profile and accuracy of the use of iron chelation drugs based on the right indications, doses, patients, drugs, and drug administration routes at Dr. Soedirman Kebumen Hospital for the 2023 period. Research method: Descriptive method, retrospective data collection. The population of all medical records of patients with a diagnosis of thalassemia major for the January-December 2023 period who met the inclusion criteria. Results: Based on 74 patients according to the inclusion criteria, the most gender was female (61%) with the age of 13-64 years (70.1%), and the most iron chelation drug was Deferipron 500mg (68.9%). Dosage accuracy: Deferiprone 500mg (4%), Deferasirox 250mg (20%), Deferasirox 500mg (67%) and right route of administration (100%). Conclusion: Based on the study of the use of iron chelation drugs in patients with thalassemia major at Dr. Soedirman Hospital, there are still several medications that are not given the right dosage of drugs for 59 patients (79%). Recommendation: Further research is needed to evaluate the compliance of the use of iron chelation drugs in patients with thalassemia major.
