Abstract

Background: Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH), lack of thyroid hormone since birth can inhibit the growth and development of children. Early detection through Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening (CHS) and appropriate treatment before the age of 1 month is very important to prevent serious complications. Some infants who are at risk of experiencing temporary Congenital Hypothyroidism, such as premature newborns (<37 weeks), infants with low birth weight, sick infants and twins especially of the same sex. Objective: To determine the relationship between infant characteristics and congenital hypothyroidism screening results at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong in 2023. Methods: This correlational study used a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 87 infants selected through purposive sampling. Univariate and bivariate analysis used the Spearman rho and chi square tests. Results: The results of the study of 87 infants who were screened, there was 1 infant (1.1%) positive (TSH> 20μU / mL). Several characteristics of the baby have a relationship with the results of Congenital Hypothyroid Screening (CHC) are younger baby age (2 days) (p = 0.012), born with a full-term gestational age (≥ 37 weeks) (p = 0.000), and having a normal birth weight (≥ 2500 grams) (p = 0.000). Gender (p = 0.376), type of birth (p = 0.868), congenital abnormalities (p = 0.849), and baby's health condition (p = 0.253) did not show a significant relationship with the results of congenital hypothyroid screening. Conclusion: Infant characteristics such as age, gestational age, and birth weight are related to CHS results. Recommendations: For research purposes, identify other factors that may influence congenital hypothyroidism.
