Abstract

Background: Stroke, a leading cause of global mortality and disability, occurs due to blockages or hemorrhages in arteries that affect brain tissue. Dysphagia, a condition that impairs swallowing ability, can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Effective interventions, such as the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy, are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Objective: To analyze the nursing care implementation of the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy in non-hemorrhagic stroke patients with dysphagia at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital. Method: This study employed a case study approach involving five non-hemorrhagic stroke patients with dysphagia. The tools used included nursing care formats, nursing kits, observation of dysphagia symptoms, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy. Results: The case study identified the main complaints of the five patients as difficulty swallowing and coughing, with a priority diagnosis of swallowing disorders related to neuromuscular impairment. Interventions provided included self-care support for eating and drinking, along with the consistent implementation of the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy over three days. This resulted in significant improvements in swallowing ability and a reduced risk of aspiration. Conclusion: The implementation of the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy in non-hemorrhagic stroke patients with dysphagia at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital significantly improved swallowing ability and reduced the risk of aspiration. Recommendation: It is recommended to continue the Shaker exercise and honey swallowing therapy as part of the standard care for stroke patients with dysphagia.
