Abstract
Background: The incidence of premenstrual distress syndrome in Indonesia is reported to be 80-90%, with a relatively high prevalence. These symptoms often interfere with teenagers' daily activities. Progressive muscle relaxation is needed and can be applied to teenagers experiencing premenstrual distress syndrome to help relax the body and reduce distress caused by hormonal changes during the premenstrual phase.. General Objective: Family nursing care at the developmental stage of adolescents, focusing on the nursing problem of family inability to cope, has been explained in Adipala Village, Adipala District, Cilacap Regency. Method: A case study design with a descriptive method was used, involving 5 family heads. The premenstrual distress syndrome (MDQ) questionnaire and observation sheets were utilized for data collection. Nursing Care Results: The study showed that all five families had the same nursing problem: an inability to cope within the family. Progressive muscle relaxation was taught to both the families and their adolescent children to be applied 3-4 times a day during the premenstrual phase, starting 2-3 days before menstruation. The results showed a reduction in premenstrual distress syndrome levels among adolescents after the progressive muscle relaxation was carried out. Pre-intervention results indicated that 60% (3 respondents) experienced moderate distress, and 40% (2 respondents) experienced mild distress. Post-intervention, 100% (5 respondents) showed a reduction in premenstrual syndrome distress. Recommendation: Based on the nursing care provided to the five families, progressive muscle relaxation in the premenstrual phase has proven effective in reducing premenstrual distress syndrome in adolescent family members.
