Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of cancer cells and leads to discomfort for patients, often resulting in chronic pain, anxiety, disruption of daily activities, and sleep disturbances. Treatment is necessary to manage these symptoms, and one approach is using Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). PMR is a relaxation technique incorporating breathing exercises to help control the central nervous system's defense mechanisms, thereby inhibiting pain impulses. Objective: To explain the nursing care provided to breast cancer patients with chronic pain by using the innovation of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital. Methods: This case study uses a descriptive method involving five breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Data were collected using observation sheets and pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. The data were then assessed to establish a diagnosis, and PMR relaxation techniques were applied as a treatment intervention. Results: After the PMR intervention, the results showed a decrease in pain and anxiety levels and an improvement in patient and family understanding of the PMR technique. All five patients experienced a reduction in pain levels from a scale of 4-6 to 2-4. Conclusion: The case study results demonstrate a significant reduction in pain levels and increased patient and family understanding of the PMR technique, as evidenced by lower pain scale values before and after the Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) therapy. Recommendation: PMR should be consistently applied to effectively manage chronic pain, accelerate pain reduction, and provide patients with a greater sense of comfort.
