Abstract
Background: Fever commonly occurs due to the mechanism inability of losing heat when attempting to balance out excessive heat overproduction. Failure to cope with fever can lead to dehydration, lack of oxygen, fever with temperature above 42oC, febrile convulsions, and even death. One of fever treatments is by implementing tepid water sponge. Objective: To describe the implementation of tepid water sponge to reduce fever on children in dr. Soedirman hospital of Kebumen. Method: This study is an analytical descriptive using quantitative design with case study approach. The respondent is a 2 year-old child with 38.1oC being treated in children ward of Dr. Soedirman hospital of Kebumen. The data analysis and display in this case study are text in the form of narration and frequency distribution table. Result: Soon after having tepid water sponge treatment, the client’s body temperature was decreasing from 38.1oC to be 37.8oC, and in the next first 15 minutes it was 37.5oC, and finally it became 37.0oC in the second 15 minutes time. Discussion: The implementation of tepid water sponge can reduce the body temperature of a client having fever. Rubbing with warm water can accelerate the broadening peripheral blood vessels to facilatate heat transfer from the body to the surrounding and can acclerate the temperature decrease as well. Conclusion: The application of implementing tepid water sponge can reduce body temperature of the client shown by the measurement of his body temperature before and after indicating the ability of tepid water sponge in reducing the temperature by 1,1oC.
