Abstract
Background: Diarrheal dehydration can cause fluid volume and electrolyte deficiency in the body. It may lead to death unless it is handled. Objective: Describing nursing care for diarrhea patients having fluid and electrolyte disturbances. Method: This study is an analytical desccriptive with case study approach. Data were obtained from interview, physical examination, observation, and documentation. The subjects were 2 children – 8 months old and 3 years old. Result: The nursing care showed that both patients with diarrhea had fluid volume and electrolyte deficiency. The assessment showed that both patients got increasing thirst, weak-look, fussiness, no appetite, liquid, mucus and blood mixed defecation and increasing leukosit. The emerging nursing problems were fluid and electrolyte shortage and knowledge deficit. Nursing plans to address this deficiency include monitoring the vital signs, fluid intake and output, encouraging to drink more, giving fluid and medecines in accordance with doctor’s instruction, and conducting health education about diarrhea. Implementation was conducted in 3x7 hours of the management. The evalution was that fluid volume and electrolyte shortage and knowledge deficit were resolvable. Coclusion: Giving patients fluid and conducting health education for their family can overcome the lack of fluid and electrolyte in diarrheal disease.
