Abstract
Background: Surgical Site Infection (SSI) is an infection that occurs within 30 days after surgery. The case of SSI is common because of direct contact with the normal flora that present in the patient’s body, therefore skin personal hygiene of the surgical area is very important. Prevention should be done by patients, their families and health professional to avoid the risk as well as to change their mindset and behavior. Health education is an activity to give an information according as client requirement to increase their knowledge. Objective: to determine the effect of pre-operative personal hygiene health education on the knowledge level and prevention behavior of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Method: The study was pre experimental design with one group pre-test post-test approach. The subjects were patients with preoperative major and medium surgery in Barokah and Inayah wards of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong in 2017 as many as 35 people. The analysis used Paired T-test with α 0,05. Result: the result showed that there was the effect of pre-operative personal hygiene health education on the knowledge level with p value = 0,000 (<0,05) and on prevention behavior with p = 0,000 (<0,05). Conclusion: There was significant effect of pre-operative personal hygiene health education on the knowledge level and prevention behavior of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Recommendation: The next study has to research about the incidence of SSI, contributing factors to prevent Surgical Site Infection (SSI) based on facilities and infrastructure, family support, the health professionals’ attitude.
