Abstract
Background: Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) according to WHO (2015) in ASEAN countries that have not achived the MDGs target is the rate of Indonesia (27/1000 death of life). One of the causes is neonatal infection, such as neonatorum tetanus. Proper care of umbilical cord can prevent the tetanus by applying breast milk method and dry sterile gauze. This application can accelerate the removal of umbilical cord and prevent infection. Breast milk is still mainly used as nutrition, it is still seldom used for umbilical cord care. Therefore, the writer is interested in modifying the application of breast milk method being wrapped by dry sterile gauze for accelerating the removal of umbilical cord. Objective: This study aims at knowing the application of breast milk method being wrapped by dry sterile gauze for accelerating the removal of umbilical cord and detecting the infections. Method: This study is an analytical descriptive with case study approach. Result: After having application of breast milk method being wrapped by dry sterile gauze, there were 3 categories of umbilical cord removal, i.e. fast category (3 participants or 60%), normal category (2 participants or 40%), and slow category (0 participant or 0%). The umbilical cords of all participants (100%) were dry removal and there was no sign of infection.
