Abstract

Background, Bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) leaves contain flavonoid compounds known to protect the skin from UV radiation. These leaves can be formulated into a sunscreen spray gel. To meet quality standards, the formulation must be optimized, which can be done using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method. Objective, To determine the optimal formulation of bilimbi leaf ethanol extract spray gel and evaluate its physical quality. Methods, Flavonoid content was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Formula optimization was carried out using the SLD method with variations of HPMC, HEC, and TEA. The responses measured were viscosity, pH, and pump delivery. The final spray gel was evaluated based on organoleptic properties, spray pattern, adhesion, homogeneity, spreadability, stability, and hedonic testing Results, The total flavonoid content of the extract was 97.84 mg QE/g. The optimal formula consisted of 0.32% HPMC, 0.44% HEC, and 1.4% TEA, with a viscosity of 366.4±45.695, pH of 6.7±0.282, and pump delivery of 0.12±0.0084, achieving a desirability value of 1. The optimal spray gel had a dark green color, characteristic odor, slightly thick consistency, good homogeneity, proper spray pattern, 10-second adhesion, 5.1 cm spreadability, physical stability, and was liked by 55% of participants in the hedonic test. Conclusion, The ethanol extract spray gel formula of bilimbi leaves meets the quality requirements for a good formulation. Recommendation, Further studies are recommended to evaluate the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) activity and irritation potential of the bilimbi leaf extract spray gel formulation.
