Abstract

Work-related stress is a common psychological problem experienced by lecturers due to high academic, administrative, and professional demands. One non-pharmacological approach that can be used to reduce work stress is aromatherapy. This study aimed to determine the effect of aromatherapy candles containing a combination of essential oils of kencur (Kaempferia galanga), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), and lemon (Citrus limon L.) on work stress levels among lecturers at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Gombong. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 39 lecturers, with 35 compliant respondents included in the analysis. Stress levels were measured using the DASS-21 stress subscale questionnaire. The intervention involved the use of aromatherapy candles for 7 consecutive days with a minimum exposure duration of 30 minutes per day. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Spearman Rank Correlation. The results showed a significant decrease in work stress levels after the aromatherapy intervention, with the Wilcoxon test yielding p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). The Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated a strong and significant relationship between pretest and posttest stress scores (rₛ = 0.642; p < 0.05). This study concludes that aromatherapy candles containing a combination of kencur, lemongrass, and lemon essential oils have a significant effect in reducing lecturers’ work stress and may serve as an effective non-pharmacological alternative for work stress management.
