Abstract

Introduction: Labor pain is caused by uterine contractions, pelvic muscle stretching, episiotomy, and psychological factors. The birth ball involves a series of simple body movements using the ball. This exercise can be performed during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, with the primary goal of serving as a non-pharmacological method to reduce pain. The birth ball can stimulate normal somatosensory input to projection neurons, thereby reducing pain perception during labor. Objective: To determine the effect of birth ball on reducing the intensity of first-stage labor pain. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental research using a one-group pre-post test design, meaning there was only one group, the intervention group. The study included 30 respondents. Before applying birth ball therapy, the respondents' labor pain levels were measured. Then, birth ball therapy was performed, followed by another pain level measurement using the same instrument. The statistical test used in this study was the Wilcoxon test. Results: Before birth ball therapy, 23 respondents experienced moderate pain (scale 4-6), and 7 respondents experienced severe pain (scale 7-9). After birth ball therapy, 15 respondents reported mild pain (scale 1-3), while the remaining 15 experienced moderate pain (scale 4-6). The Wilcoxon statistical test showed a p-value of 0.000, indicating that birth ball therapy is effective in reducing the intensity of first-stage labor pain. Conclusion: Birth ball therapy is effective in reducing first-stage labor pain. It helps mothers feel comfortable and relaxed, thereby reducing labor pain intensity. Recommendation: Hospitals are encouraged to implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for birth ball therapy to reduce first-stage labor pain intensity.
