Abstract
Background: The main symptom in patients with COPD is shortness of breath caused by excessive sputumproduction, making the nursing diagnosis of ineffective airway clearance a priority. The pursed lip breathing technique can help address this issue, especially in patients with respiratory disorders such as COPD, asthma, or other conditions that cause mucus build up and difficulty breathing. Objective: To describe the application of nursing care for ineffective airway clearance using the pursed lip breathing technique in COPD patients in the emergency department. Methods: This study used a case study method involving three COPD patients in the emergency department, with the intervention of pursed lip breathing exercises to address ineffective airway clearance. Success was evaluated by comparing Respiratory Rate (RR) and SaO₂ values before and after the intervention. Results: The pursed lip breathing intervention increased oxygen saturation and decreased respiratory rate in all three COPD patients. However, rhonchi breath sounds were still audible, and sputum remained yellowish, although its viscosity improved. Overall, the technique was effective in improving oxygenation and breathing effort, but airway conditions still require monitoring. Conclusion: After providing nursing care and the pursed lip breathing intervention to the three COPD patients, it was found that all patients experienced a decrease in respiratory rate and an increase in oxygen saturation. Recommendation: Future research is recommended to compare pursed lip breathing with other breathing techniques or to evaluate its long-term impact on the quality of life of COPD patients.
