Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by blood pressure levels exceeding the normal threshold, typically exceeding 140/90 mmHg. Addressing hypertension often involves non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches, such as employing relaxation through back massage and utilizing lemon aromatherapy. Objectives: To elucidate the nursing care provided through the application of relaxation therapy via back massage and lemon aromatherapy and its efficacy in mitigating neck pain among hypertension patients within the Emergency Room of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a descriptive methodology with a case study approach, this research enrolled a sample comprising five elderly patients clinically diagnosed with hypertension. The case study instrument comprised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for back massage relaxation therapy and lemon aromatherapy, as well as pre- and posttherapy observation sheets. Back massage relaxation therapy and lemon aromatherapy interventions were administered, and observations were conducted before and after each session. Results: Five patients who were experiencing acute pain were recruited in this study, and they were given nursing interventions including pharmacological therapy and nonpharmacological techniques: back massage once daily for 8 hours, with a therapy duration of 15–30 minutes, along with inhalation of lemon aromatherapy via a humidifier during the massage, conducted once daily for 15–30 minutes over 8 hours. Subsequently, preand post-therapy assessments were carried out. Following an 8-hour application for each patient, a reduction was observed in blood pressure readings, pulse frequency, and pain scales. The pain scale decreased from the initial 6 to 4, leading to diminished pain complaints, facial expressions of discomfort, protective behavior, and anxiety levels. Recommendation: The outcomes of this study offer practical insights that can be incorporated into the care of patients experiencing acute pain, providing a nonpharmacological means to alleviate blood pressure, pulse frequency, pain scales, painrelated issues, expressions of discomfort, protective responses, and anxiety.
